Your best MUMFORD Memory. A one-liner just from you.

The USY conventions that I went to and the friends I met and made.

If I knew then what I know now.....

I would still have pursued the same path.

However, if I had to do it over again, I would have gone to law school to attain a JD and taken the bar exam in order to practice.

Nevertheless, I attained satisfaction with the jobs I held.

School Story:

I vividly remember a number of historical events that occurred while I was a student at Mumford.

One event was the election of JFK. I stayed up practically all night on Election Night watching the drama as the returns came and was elated when it became definite that he was elected.

At the moment that he was sworn into office I was taking my Spanish (1) final. At 12:36 I answered the question in Spanish "Que el presidente de Estados Unidos ahora?" I answered "El presidente nueve John F Kennedy."

I remember the Bay of Pigs Fiasco and Cuban crisis and discussing those events in class.

On the day that Kennedy was assassinated I was walking home from school with my friends, Richard Gurwin and Stanley Greenblatt. And yes we were talking politics, especially about the up coming 1964 elections. I remarked that Kennedy had decided to keep Vice-President Johnson on the ticket because Kennedy needed him to carry Texas.

We stopped into a store to purchase a jock strap. When the purchase was completed and we were ready to leave, a bulletin came over the radio that was playing there announcing that Kennedy had been shot in the head and was in critical condition.

Richard, Stanley, and I walked in silence going east on Curtis from Wyoming. Each of us were lost in our own thoughts. Richard turned off on Woodingham and Stanley turned off on Prairie.

When I got to Livernois I stopped at Max's grocery store to find out if anyone had heard any more news. As soon as I heard on the radio that Kennedy was in critical condition, Mrs. Ross, an lady that I had known from being in the Democratic Party came in to make a purchase. I took her up on her offer for a ride to 7 Mile Road and Livernois.

When she started the engine and the radio came to life, Mrs. Ross and I heard the announcement that President Kennedy was dead.

After she dropped me off at 7 Mile Road, I walked eastward the 5 blocks to my street Muirland. As a bus full of people passed by. I wondered if the driver and the passengers knew that Kennedy was assassinated. Things seemed to be going on as if nothing had happened, but to me things had changed radically.

I turned south on Muirland to go 1 block to home. Rarely did I ever take that route. I remembered walking that way some 3 years earlier before Kennedy was elected wondering who would succeed Eisenhower. Three years later as I was walking on that same path Kennedy was gone and another old man was going to take his place. Kennedy seemed like a dream that flew away.

A note about who I thought were my best teachers:
Mrs. Koenigsberg 9B literature and public speaking
Mr. Braun Spanish 1, 2, and 4
Mrs. Flanders English 11A. From her I learned how to write
Mr. Pobutsky, 9A and 12B English. From him I learned about the etymology of words and got a better appreciation for them
Mr. Daniel algebra 1. Helped me understand the subject
Mr. Hutchinson, civics
Dr. Slobin, economics
Mr. Simon public speaking 4

With which classmates do you remain in touch?

Since moving out of Detroit 44 years ago I really lost contact with everybody. That's why I would have loved to attend the reunion but the timing was bad for me.

Nevertheless, I'm using the internet to try to re-establish some connection with my old classmates. Hopefully, I may have a chance to see them and introduce them to my wife, Chana.
