Cole was a good friend of mine and only one day older than me. I was deeply sorry about his death and have stayed in touch with his brother, Hal, over the years as a means to stay connected with the family.
I remember spending a lot of time at Cole's home as children, since he lived around the corner from me on Roslyn. After University of Michigan, Cole and I renewed our friendship. He lived in Southfield near my office on Ten Mile Road and he would sometimes stop by after work. We played gin rummy then, just like we did as kids. He was at my office not too long before he died in the canoeing accident. I stayed in touch with Cole's mother, who was so gracious and lovely, Sometimes I would see her at Tam O'Shanter CC when I came back from Florida (where I moved) and visited Detroit.
Thinking about all this sure makes one feel one's mortality. I will drink a toast to Cole at our reunion.
