My heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved Toby. She was a free spirit who carved her own path, mother to children who turned out right, and contributor to society. I will remember her warm smile and giving nature. My thoughts are with you.
I'm so sorry to hear of Toby Kukes passing. She and I became best friends the year we were both thrown into a split-grade7th grade class with the mean "January boys". I was broken-hearted when her step father, "Mr. Clean' moved the family to Beverly Hills to run his dry cleaning businesses (?) the following school year.
We stayed pen pals and spent a memorable week together the summer of 1968, when we flew from LA to San Francisco. I was a naive country mouse in comparison to artistic, super hip artistic Toby. We lost contact in the years that followed. Her brother Roger, a nationally reknown reading specialist, showed up to in the 90's at the school where I was teaching . If any of you ever purchased "Toby's Tofu" , the company was owned by Toby.
