Rick was a tennis player on the Mumford Team and in addition a very good student. He became a physician and moved to California, where most of his local friends lost track of him.  He was very well liked and even as a kid he was a gentleman.

Ricky and I were really good friends growing up. We followed Soupy Sales together and he came over to my house to play when we were young kids. Later we would play poker at Ricky's house. His father would allow him to host the card games. I remember his dad used to take the family to Lafayette Coney Island often. Ricky was a very social and fun loving person and we remained friends throughout high school. We were in a fraternity club together and I introduced him to his future wife. He was a cool guy.. and he will be missed.

Richard was our No.1 singles player and in 1963 was the No.2 player

in the City of Detroit. He was featured in articles about our team with pictures

in the Detroit News Sports section in June, 1963, front page, and May,1964.

I still have those newspaper clippings. He was a great player and a great guy

to be around and was the main reason Mumford reached such a high level in

tennis in those years. He is missed.

The world has lost yet another good person.  I hate when that happens.  While we were not close, he struck me as one of those who could light up a room just by walking in and smiling.  My sympathies go out to those who feel his loss.

I am shocked to hear the news. I went to medical school in Des Moines with Ricky. He was a great guy, very honest, and I'll always remember his amazing honesty when asked why he wanted to be a doctor. We both become Anesthesiologists, in fact when I called him and asked him if he got bored doing this (as I was switching specialties), and he laughed at me. We lost a good one :-(

I'm so saddened to find out we've lost Ricky. He and I took Driver's Ed together and he made it so much fun.
He was a gentleman even then. A great loss for the world.
