Matthew was a Hampton Classmate. Knew him most  from then. The guy could really play the violin. I started lessons with Mr. Miranda and quit soon after hearing Matt play.

I'm pretty sad about all our departed classmates.  I spent time at Matthew's listening to symphony music as his parents taught  violin and viola.  He also played great classical guitar.  Can't wait to see all the grads especially the hamptonites.  Hope all is well.  Allan Morton

It saddens me to hear of the deaths of these 3 classmates. Of the three I rememer Matthew the most. He was in many of my classes at Hampton, and I spoke with him often. Matthew was the most amazing musician. If I rememer correctly, his father was the First Chair (violin) of the Detroit Symphony for many years.

My parents and the Mischakoffs were very dear friends and we were often at their house listening to music.  Matthew went to Spain to study classical guitar and was an amazing musician.  We used to play practical jokes on each other.  Hanukkah parties at the Mischakoffs are memories to cherish.  The adults would perform for the kids and Matthew enjoyed them abundantly.

Billy Joel was right when he told me "Only the good die young."  May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Matt and I roomed together in college in Ann Arbor. He always had a smile on his face was in a good mood. Simply a real nice guy. Living with him, of course, had the added advantage of great live classical guitar music every day (with occasional mandolin for variety). He also loved tropical fish and we had a huge 60+ gallon tank on the second floor of this rickety old house. I always  worried about the tank falling through the first floor.

Leonard Woolf (1964)

In 1962 Matthew, Sema Lederman, and Joel Gorden, were my violins on my 45 rpm record. Matthew spent many a day at my house on Stoepel. We use to play a game on the piano. He would look away, and I would play a note on the piano. Matt would tell me the note. He never missed a note. He had perfect pitch. Since my father was a well known band leader, we had much in common. Hell of a guy, and I will certainly miss him.

I played in chamber music groups with Matthew at Mumford and outside of school. One time his father, who was Concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony,  coached us on a work we were going to perform. We told him we were going to be paid for our performance.  His father was pleased we were going to be paid, but clearly disappointed when we told him we were getting $ 20-- $ 5 apiece!

He played so eloquently and beautifully. I was in awe of his talent.
