Max Gross was a very nice person. I had him for chemistry. My grandparents were members of the Workman's Circle with him; he lived across the street from me when we lived on Tyler, and my oldest cousin was friends with his daughter, when she lived on Tyler also.
Mr. Gross allowed me to pass Chemistry even though I didn't deserve it. I broke my ankle and missed about three weeks of school toward the end of the semester and hadn't been doing too well in the class before that. When I returned to school I hobbled up on my crutches and asked Mr. Gross how I was ever going to pass the class. He said I should do the best I could, take the final, and he'd pass me with a D. As I recall, I couldn't answer one question on the exam, but he did pass me and I was very thankful. He was a very nice and compassionate man.
