Gene Hancock was the vocal music accompanist for two years at Mumford. He became was a mentor and remained a friend long after he left Mumford to pursue his doctorate in NYC.
When I needed to find a piano accompanist for a 'cello-piano performance on WWJ radio, a performance taped at Mumford, Mr. Hancock kindly volunteered to learn the very difficult piano part.
In addition to being the accompanist for Ms Engel's Choir, Mr Hancock was Director of the Boy's Glee Club and I'll always remember him as a kind, fun-loving, and talented man.
I was also, in the boy's glee club (about 1 or 2 years). I still remember the different parts (of Sing Noel) and the passion that went into each song's direction. Choir was nice, but boy's glee was a soulful and emotional boost (that I still carry). I hope Gene had a good life (after Mumford).
Gene was a mentor and friend. He left Mumford for NYC/Union Theological Seminary where he attained a Doctor of Sacred Music. He was a church organist, professer of music, and composer. We kept in touch for years, then reconnected when he gave a concert at the National Cathedral.
